Hypothetical Question

Is there any point in giving someone a birthday card if the only nice thing that you can think of to say that doesn't make you gag is "Happy Birthday"? Because nothing else is true. Usually I would write something like "It's great to work with you!" or "You're such a fun person!"
or some such complimentary phrase. But what if you really dislike the person? What if this person recently stabbed you in the back in a completely egregious manner? Is it worth the gesture? Is the small political goodwill that it might engender worth your last card that actually says "Happy Birthday"?

Disclaimer: This post has nothing whatsoever to do with my working life. Which I strive to never mention here at all. In fact, I am not employed at all. Yeah, yeah, that's it, not employed at all.

I would write, "You've lived another year. Congratulations."

Then include a picture of Angela from The Office.

Tough one. I guess my answer will be to ask yourself if you would regret not giving the card on the next day. I once received a birthday card that read,"Happy Birthday to a woman who has given so much to so many..." and then you opened it and it said,"Slut!" If it hadn't been given to me by my best friend I might have been offended. I don't know if they still make it, but a card like that might work in a "keep em guessing" kind of way.

Holy shit, y'all, those are both hilarious! Mona, I just totally blew my "Hard at Work" cover by laughing at your comment. "You've lived another year" - that is priceless. And would totally work on the person I was talking about.

mrsgrumpy, I love the slut card. It wouldn't work for this situation, but I have some friends who would love it. I will definitely try to find it. And I like your advice. I kind of thought of something similar and decided that I would be disappointed in myself if I did give a card to someone who had treated me so poorly. So I did not give the card. Tra-la-la.

I always just put "Enjoy your day". I hate those pass-around cards, I can NEVER think of anything good whether I hate or love the person.

Hey Tessie, I know what you mean about the pass-arounds. There's so little space that you really can't say anything meaningful anyway, so I usually just scrawl something generic.

Happy Birthday @sshat, bless your heart. (How about that?)

Hey oh the joys! Welcome! And I love your suggestion. Perfectly encapsulates how I feel about him and my Southern nature that doesn't want to tell anyone off. Genius!
