Audio Books

So I recently discovered audio books. Why hello, 20th century! What other marvels will you bring me? No, I don't have an ipod. Or a blackberry, why do you ask? Anyway, back to audio books. They have changed my life. I commute an hour each way to my office, so that's 10 hours in the car every week. Turning that into "reading" time is awesome. It's especially nice in the mornings, when there's no one to call and talk to. I'm on my third audio book and it's so nice to feel like I'm being told a story as I drive to work and home. Here the part where you come in. Please recommend books that you've read recently that I can listen to on my drives. Any suggestions welcome, but especially older books that I can find on cd at used book stores. Thanks!

That will be me soon with the long commute.

I loved Hattie Big Sky and Little Brother on CD. Amazon usually has pretty good deals on used audio books, from what I've seen (which is, granted, not much).

Awesome, thanks Janssen!

I really enjoyed Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" on audiobook!

my all-time favorite is harry potter on audiobook... it translates really well to audio, and the guy who reads them is great and does voices and everything :-) i listened to ender's game recently, and the romanov bride, both of which were fun to listen to.

I have never listened to an audio book. I don't know why, but I keep resisting. I just love the physical aspect of reading. I also don't have a commute. But I've been told that listening to a book while running makes the time fly by, so maybe I should give it a try.

I love me a good audio book too and found that the library has a good selection too!

I have both an iPod and a BlackBerry and yet I have never listened to an audiobook. Of course, now I don't commute, so I guess it's not an issue.

Anyway, I love Carlos Ruiz Zafon. He has several books, but only two have been translated into English: The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game.

Kathy - That may be the only way I could put up with it! Thanks!

Alice - I think that's an awesome idea. I've been resisting the Harry Potter series, so audio is the perfect format. Thanks!

Nicole - I held out for a long time, too. And I'm still trying to figure out what I'd rather read an actual book of and what I don't mind listening to on cd. A co-worker of mine had a bunch of audio books in her car when I rode with her one day and I asked to borrow one. And like I said, it transformed my commute. And I think it "wakes my brain up" in the mornings, so that I'm more alert and productive once I get to work.

Amy - yeah, I think I'm going to look into that. Because I don't really want to keep the audiobooks once I've listened to them. And I constantly want more, more, more. So I need some kind of "turn these in, get more" program. Or unlimited funds, but I always need that. : )

Jess - Thanks for the recommendation!

I don't really like David Sedaris books when I read them, but I think they're hilarious when I listen to him read them aloud on books on c.d. It's very strange. But I would recommend those, and I would send the recommendation for the Harry Potter books.

R - thanks! I think the David Sedaris suggestion is a great one. And I'm like you, I think his stories will be funnier when he tells them. They're okay on paper, but I have a feeling they'd be really great told.
