Ooh, wasn't BlogShare fun! I love hearing other people's secrets!
Some snippets from my life recently....
Took Supergirl to see Where the Wild Things Are yesterday and we both loved it. I was really wondering how they were going to make a picture book with very few sentences into a full-length movie, but they managed it beautifully. They added a lot, of course, as I expected, but it all felt very true to the story. I would have added one scene at the end, but that's just me. It was visually gorgeous, of course.
I finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest over the weekend and it was awesome. My biggest fear was, since Larsson had planned more novels in the series, that this one would not have a decisive ending. That it would leave the story hanging, the way the previous two had. I am so pleased to say that I was wrong - this book very neatly ties up all loose ends. The story could continue, sure. The main character is still alive and will do more and there is more that we could learn about her. But the story can end here satisfyingly.
On Friday night, we taught Supergirl to play Clue. Since then, she has been obsessed. We have played Clue every spare second of every day. What's funny is how differently we play when just Supergirl and I play versus when Rock joins in. Rock, being former military, is very strategic. In fact, it took me three or four games to figure out that if I went to a room that I had the card for, I could make them show me a person or weapon card. Since then, I've found myself trying out different ways of controlling the different variables and making them show me certain cards. I caught myself strategizing Clue in the shower this morning.
Perhaps the 7 year old isn't the only one obsessed, is what I'm saying here...

I get obsessed with games too and find myself strategizing in my head at all hours of the day.
Wow--we just introduced 6 year-old Wynnie to Crazy 8's. Obviously I'm going to have to step up my game teaching skills before her next birthday!
Janssen - To me, it's the fun of "playing as an adult" versus "playing as a kid". When I pick the game back up, I play the way I used to, the way I did when I was a kid. But the more we play, the more I start playing like an adult. So the more I start thinking about it, and planning strategy.
Hyphen - Yeah, we challenge her a bit. And we don't "let her win" at all. In fact, she gets frustrated, because when we first start playing a new game, she doesn't win at all. Then, she slowly starts learning how to play, and how to strategize, and she finally starts winning. But once she starts winning, she knows she's really winning, we're not humoring her at all. BUT, like I said, I also play with her without hubby and we play more relaxed and talk through things more so that she can learn a bit more, so that she's more prepared for the more competitive games with her dad.
Did you find a copy of the movie yet? I saw two at the Columbia Heights Target on Saturday.
Mal - yes, I found the movie. We still haven't WATCHED it yet. Too busy playing the game! :)
man i used to ADORE clue growing up. and i was totally the mean older sister who realized you could ask scenarios with clues you already knew in order to figure out what your opponent was holding, and therefore won every. single. game. against my little sister.
Alice - Yeah, I'm kind of embarassed to admit that MY HUSBAND taught me that trick.
We taught my little 4-year-old to play Rummikub. He thinks this entire game is all about him. He moves all the numbers to face him and keeps the jokers hidden in his pocket. It's too funny. I should start cheating at candyland, that'll teach him!
Mashuga mom - hello and welcome! Yes, cheating at Candyland! Would be about the only way to stay sane playing Candyland. God, how I hate that game.
